WHAT IS COVID -19?
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2’ (SARS-CoV-2) is the agent of Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19.
SYMPTOMS
Current symptoms include mild to severe respiratory illness with cough, sore throat, shortness of breath or fever.
TRANSMISSION
The virus spreads from person to person when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how influenza and other respiratory pathogens spread.
TREATMENT
Treatment is providing oxygen for patients with shortness of breath or treating a fever. To date there is no specific antiviral treatment available.
PREVENTION
The following can provide protection against infection from COVID-19:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with dirty hands.
- Avoid close contact with sick people.
- Stay home when you are sick and try and keep a distance from others.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a flexed elbow or a tissue.
- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
